What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that’s bonded on top of your damaged or weakened tooth. They’re fully customized to match the size, shape, and shade of your natural teeth for seamless results. Once it’s placed, no one will be able to tell that it’s there.

You might need this type of restoration if you have:

  • An overly decayed tooth that cannot be sufficiently addressed with a filling.
  • A dental fracture or chip that has destabilized your tooth’s structure.
  • A tooth that has recently undergone a root canal procedure.
  • To anchor a dental bridge in place.
  • To complete your dental implant treatment.

The Dental Crown Process

Although the dental crown process may vary slightly based on your unique circumstances, typically, you can expect the following steps:

  1. Before you can proceed, you must consult with Dr. Koenitzer to ensure that you are a good candidate for this treatment and that there are no issues, like cavities or gum disease, that can interfere with results.
  2. Our team will gently remove a small amount of enamel from your troublesome tooth to ensure your prosthetic fits correctly.
  3. Making impressions. We use digital X-rays and CEREC CAD/CAM technology to capture detailed images of your teeth and gums. These will be used as the reference to create your restoration.
  4. We’ll place a small block of durable ceramic into an onsite milling machine that carves out your dental crown the same day you visit.

Once we’ve bonded your new artificial tooth in place, we’ll remove any excess cement, and you’ll be able to show off your recently restored smile.
