A Closer Look at the Lifespan of Dental Bridges
June 2, 2023
Did you know that roughly 170 million Americans have at least one missing tooth? This makes tooth loss a pretty widespread issue—but no one should have to live without a complete set of beautiful and functional pearly whites! This is where tooth replacement solutions such as dental bridges come into play—they’re quite capable of restoring lost teeth, but are they considered a permanent solution? Keep reading to learn more from your trusted dentist about dental bridges and their expected lifespans, along with some tips for keeping your bridge intact for as long as possible.
How Do Dental Bridges Work?
Dental bridges are designed to replace missing teeth, and there are typically two different types used: removable bridges and fixed bridges. Removable bridges are normally cheaper and don’t require surgery, relying instead on healthy adjacent teeth for support. Fixed bridges are either cemented in place or surgically fastened to your jawbone. Both are very capable of restoring lost teeth and all of the associated issues, including dental drift, impeded oral functionality, and other problems.
Research consistently indicates that under optimal conditions, dental bridges can last for up to five to seven years, or even over ten years, though this depends on several lifestyle factors including oral care routine, diet, habits, etc. Though not a permanent solution, they’re impressively durable!
Tips for Maximizing Your Dental Bridge’s Lifespan
The bottom line is that the lifespan of your dental bridge is directly linked with the health of your mouth, but the good news is that there are many ways you can keep dental bridges intact and ensure that yours lasts and serves you well for several years. Consider the following tips:
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing every day; brush your bridge in addition to your natural teeth.
- Limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as they can cause decay that affects your healthy adjacent teeth supporting your bridge.
- Be mindful of foods that are tough to bite and chew including steak, nuts, caramel, and more.
- Avoid bad oral habits like smoking and using tobacco, chewing on ice, or using your teeth to open packaging or hold objects. All of these can harm your bridge and cause early failure!
- Visit your dentist for biannual checkups; this allows your provider to inspect your bridge and ensure it’s still in great shape.
