Your Dentist Explains the Various Benefits of CEREC
December 2, 2018
Dental crowns have been used for over 100 years to restore patients’ teeth. Thankfully, modern dentistry has progressed to give you the best-looking crown yet. These are caps that fit on top of your teeth to not only restore its strength, but it restores the aesthetic appearance of your smile as well. These crowns typically take multiple visits to be placed, but now, modern technology allows crowns to be placed in just one appointment! Keep reading to learn the benefits of CEREC same-day crowns from a trusted dentist.
Traditional Dental Crowns
Traditionally, dental crowns take two visits: preparation and placement. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown by taking X-Rays and filing down your tooth to accommodate the restoration. They will take impressions of your mouth to design your dental crown. The extent of the reshaping of your tooth will depend on how severely decayed your tooth is. They will then give you a temporary crown to wear until your new one is ready to be placed.
After preparation, you will go back for a second visit to receive your crown. During the time in between, your crown is made to exact specifications to fit your mouth for a great restoration.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
With this method, there’s only one easy visit. Instead of taking impressions and waiting for a crown to be ready, your dentist can take digital pictures of the shape of your tooth with a CEREC computer. This eliminates the need for multiple impressions, it saves time, and it provides a more accurate outline for your restoration. Additionally, your dentist won’t need to remove as much of your natural tooth structure because they will have your dental crown ready for placement immediately.
Now for the cool part: your dentist takes that digital image of your tooth, and their computer magically carves you a perfect crown out of a solid block of ceramic. You can even pick the exact shade of ceramic you want, so it can match the rest of your smile.
For the final step your dentist will glaze your crown in an oven to give it a polished and tooth-like finish. Once it cools, its ready to be placed on your tooth for a strong and beautiful smile.
