BioClear the Natural Choice for Flawless Smiles
July 28, 2017
At the Petaluma dental practice of Bob Koenitzer, DDS, we pride ourselves on offering the latest, most innovative dental techniques and technologies for our patients. However, we only invest the time and energy in learning and incorporating these innovative methods when they will have a significant impact on patients’ comfort and the efficacy of treatment. One treatment we’ve added to our services recently is BioClear Matrix for cosmetic smile enhancement. Typically recommended following orthodontic treatment when there are gaps at the top of teeth where they meet the gum line, this high quality dentistry service is only available from select providers, and we are proud to offer our patients this unique new cosmetic dental solution. Uses for BioClear
BioClear can be used to improve the appearance of numerous cosmetic flaws including chips, cracks, stains, and gaps in teeth. In most cases, we recommend BioClear to close gaps in teeth that often appear following orthodontic treatment. For most patients, these gaps look like black triangles between their teeth. Unlike porcelain veneers that require the removal of healthy tooth structure, BioClear can be directly applied to fill in these gaps while preserving healthy tooth structure. You may think this sounds like direct bonding, and you would be correct. However, the results are what sets BioClear apart from this cosmetic treatment. The composite resin material used for direct bonding becomes stained over time, and it does not always mold properly to fill in the black triangle gaps between teeth. For these patients, we will likely recommend BioClear.
We will not recommend BioClear for teeth that are damaged, weakened, or decayed. Unfortunately, unhealthy teeth cannot be solely repaired with BioClear. Instead, we may want to place a dental crown or perform other more advanced treatments to improve the appearance of your smile while keeping teeth whole and healthy.
The BioClear Process
The BioClear cosmetic treatment process is very similar to the more traditional cosmetic dentistry solution, direct bonding. We begin by numbing the treatment area to ensure complete comfort. Then, we use an etchant material to roughen the surface of the tooth to ensure the BioClear material will fuse with the enamel. Next, we place a sheet of Mylar that will hold and form the flowable BioClear composite to fill in the spaces between teeth. Once the composite has been molded into position, a curing light is used to harden it in place. Finally, the treated area is polished leaving a natural looking, flawless smile.
